Did Trump End Liberalism? ft. Nightmare Vision

Restoring Order - Episode 307

Nightmare Visions joins me for a sprawling discussion on current events and political philosophy. In the first half, we discuss his thoughts on where things stand in the wake of Trump’s historic victory, Gaetz stepping down from AG, liberal capitulation, and the history the so-called dissident right.

In the second half, we consider whether the term dissident right should be discarded. Are there downsides to styling yourself as a dissident? Are we still dissidents, even though Trump won the popular vote and every swing state? We then shift gears to critique Francis Fukuyama’s post-election essay, in which he argues that Trump’s victory “represents a decisive rejection by American voters of liberalism.” We explore Fukuyama’s flawed and self-serving intellectual history, and explain why Trump has far more in common with historic American liberalism than what Fukuyama advocates for.
