Jacques Ellul: Technology and Propaganda ft. Kruptos

Restoring Order - EP 324

Kruptos is a writer, podcaster, and Twitter poster. He joins me for a broad discussion on North American politics and Jacques Ellul.

To begin, Kruptos recounts his intellectual journey. We then consider the differences between Canadian and American politics. What effect, if any, have President Trump’s tariffs and threat of annexation had on the upcoming Canadian election? Kruptos offers a sympathetic, though not entirely uncritical, outsider perspective on Trump. Toward the end of the first half, we ponder whether the tariffs were in fact 5D chess as some have claimed.

In the second half of the show (available to subscribers), we consider the many ways the right has changed since Trump came down the escalator in 2015. We explore how the dissident right has changed over the years, particularly since Trump won reelection. We then switch gears to discuss the French philosopher Jacques Ellul. Kruptos provides a summary of his main ideas. What does the term technique mean within Ellul’s work? How do his ideas on technology relate to propaganda? Tune in to find out.
