The Case for Glenn Youngkin
Why the dissident right should support Glenn Youngkin, despite his faults
Virginia voters have just finished casting their ballots to elect their commonwealth’s next governor. Glenn Youngkin, the GOP candidate, is running against Democrat Terry McAuliffe. Currently, both RealClearPolitics and FiveThirtyEight show a slight advantage for Youngkin. However, given that mail-in ballots can be counted until November 5, we won’t know the election’s outcome tonight; and when we do, we will be left to wonder, as with the 2020 presidential election, whether foul play altered the results. The purpose of this article, though, is not to delve into the minutiae of election procedures, but instead to consider Glenn Youngkin from a dissident right perspective.
On paper, Glenn Youngkin is your typical Conservatism Inc. candidate. His documented ties to the Council on Foreign Relations, American Enterprise Institute, and the Carlyle Group prevent us from erroneously viewing him as the man who will deliver us from globalist tyranny. Youngkin is very much a man of the establishment, but this doesn’t mean that he has nothing to offer. As I will demonstrate, when it comes to governors, there’s a stronger case to be made against making the perfect the enemy of the good.
First, we’ll examine Youngkin’s policies, the most significant to us being his promise to ban critical race theory. Given that CRT is nothing more than rationalized anti-white animus, it being banned in Virginia would be a huge win for our side – not just at the state level, but also nationally, as it would galvanize concerned voters to demand the same in their states. Moreover, focusing on CRT, much like immigration, is a positive development for the right because it forces white people to think critically about real issues like race and identity.
Mirroring trends in other states, parents in Virginia are growing increasingly concerned with the insidious threat posed by CRT, with education becoming the preeminent issue in the election. Astonishingly, voters primarily motivated by concerns over education favored McAullife by 33 points in September. As of last week, they now favor Youngkin by nine points. Such a considerable, 42-point shift in less than a month reveals what anyone paying attention to the ongoing chaos in Loudoun County already knows: that parents are growing sick and tired of their children being subjected to leftist insanity.
Critical race theory isn’t the only education-related issue on which Glenn Youngkin has campaigned. In addition to banning CRT, Youngkin has denounced the recently enacted transgender bathroom policy which, but a few months later, resulted in the conviction of a trans teenager of two counts of forcible sodomy. After the first sexual assault, this student was quietly transferred to a different school in Loudoun County, where he allegedly assaulted another student. Many have seen the infuriating clip of the first victim’s father being arrested at a school board meeting. His crime? Opposing the very policies that resulted in the sexual assault of his daughter.
Clearly, preventing mentally ill, dysmorphic boys from occupying the same bathroom or locker room as young girls is a necessary move. But there is a significance to this issue that transcends Virginia politics. A Youngkin win could potential stall the enactment of similar transgender policies at the state level across the country by scaring Democratic politicians and candidates. Indeed, it mustn’t be forgotten that some liberal pundits blamed Hillary Clinton’s 2016 loss in part on her support for niche issues like “trans rights.” Former Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill also cited a focus on “transsexuals” as one reason why Democrats failed to acquire more Senate seats in 2020.
On covid related issues, Glenn Youngkin delivers as well. Although vaccinated himself, he has vocally opposed mandates and vowed to keep schools open. This is low hanging fruit, to be fair – no Republican candidate who supports vaccine mandates should be supported whatsoever – but it will prevent further medical tyranny from being enacted in Virginia.
Youngkin’s other policies are less notable. 13 states currently tax groceries, Virginia included, which Youngkin has vowed to end. He has also vowed to suspend the recent gas tax hike for 12 months, provide one time tax rebates, and cut income taxes by doubling the standard deduction. Additionally, we can expect Youngkin to safeguard police funding and qualified immunity, which will hopefully maintain some semblance of law and order in Virginia. These policies would surely be good for Virginians but, as previously stated, they aren’t exactly gamechangers.
For the aforementioned reasons, Glenn Youngkin would make life better for Virginians. He isn’t running for the presidency – and were he, I would be less supportive. At the state level, we need governors to channel Ron DeSantis by curbing the extremes of the left’s destructive agenda and ensuring that honest, normal people can live their lives freely and raise their children in peace. Expecting the God Emperor to manifest as governor of Virginia or Florida is a bit unrealistic. Obviously, when it comes to presidential candidates, we need to have higher standards and policies like immigration restriction, a federal ban on critical race theory, the dismantling of the federal bureaucracy, etc. But again, when it comes to state-level politics, the achievable goals differ.
